How do i change the ignition barrell on a VW polo 1996 modle, Do i need to change the whole steering column?
Answers:
Put the key into the barrell and this will release the tumblers inside the barrell and allow you pull it out. If you dont have the key, you will need to remove the entire assembly but not the steering column. The barrell assembly is held on by 2 shear bolts. These are located underneath the assembly and can be a pig to remove. I always use a centre punch to make an indentation in the head of the bolt and then gently tap the bolt anti clockwise. When you have them both removed, this will allow you to remove the bottom half of the lock holder and fit the new barrell. You can buy new shear bolts from a main dealer for a few pence.
You should buy a start button, they normally replace your ciggy lighter (so long as you don't smoke i guess) and you'll still need the key to turn, so that the electrics come on. Cost £15 and self fit. Just Google 'em.
no you dont need to change the column, just the barrell but you do need the key to do it. if you have lost them would recommend a garage or you could cause more damage.
