Hey, how often does a car need to be serviced?

i recently bought my car and it was serviced on december 2005 with the mot. It has been 8 months since last service would u advice i get another one soon or wait until mot expires december 2006?

Answers:
Having your car serviced every 5,000 kms/3,000 miles, or every 6 months (whichever comes first) is recommended, especially if you do a lot of driving.

You should have your car serviced since it's been 8 months since you last brought it in.
you should service car every 12 months
depends on wether you have breakdown cover or not
Get it serviced every 3000 miles to be safe

Your way over due.!
OK, whats MOT?? Service would mean alot of things like tune up, oil change or anything relative to changing parts, fluids, and such. Can you be more specific?
whenever u want
Main service once every 12 months - this dosent mean to say nothing else wil break inbetween though.
Also if the car you bought has not had regular services before you owned it then it may need doing sooner as certain parts in the car need to be replaced after a set milage - not doning so can be very costly.
WOOOOOOOOOO what kind of service are you refering to. Oil changes depending on manufacturer should be done every 3-5000 miles or 3 months whichever comes first. Check you owners manual. That car won't last 2 years if you don't properly maintain it.
every 12,000 miles or once a year
i service mine every 5,000 miles
It really depends on how many miles you do in it. But usually you have a full service every 12 months and an interim service in the 6 months between. But as an ex driving instructor I should tell you that you should keep up with your daily and weekly checks. ie check the tyres for bumps and pressures, keep an eye on the fluids and oil etc
do you have a Manual that came with the car. It has the service interval that is recommended by the manufacturer. Most Mechanics recommend 3000 mile oil change intervals not to exceed 6 months in time. If you use full synthetic oil you can go out to 5,000 and a year. There are other items such as fluid levels and tires that have a regular service schedule. If you are really confused about all this just go to Jiffy Lube or similar and have them check everything. They will tell you when to come back.
For your own peace of mind, every 6 months. Not beyond 12 months. Its good to have it done especially if you have not got the experience to work at it yourself. They detect tyre wear, brake shoe wear, and very importently oil fo the engine.
Service it when it needs service. Check your own fluids and change your own oil. Don't rely on other bozos to do it for you otherwise you will end up calling a tow truck on the side of the road in a lonely and dangerous place.

Your car is your temple. Keep the riff raff and wannabe mechanic boyfriends out of it.
according to viecle spec found in service record
Every 4-8 months depending on what part of the country you live. I live in New Mexico, were we have dry heat, high altitude and it very sandy i need to service my truck abou tevery 5 months . new oil and all filters changed. If you live somewere that is not as dry an sandy you may not to service your vechile as much.
less often than I do..
whenever i get a new car it gets a service and timing belt, unless last owner can prove its had one.
as for servicing have a major service yearly and an oil and filter between services will keep it tip top.
6 or 12 months or 10,000 miles (work in a garage)
every 10.000 miles
Service intervals on modern European cars range from 6000 miles to 12,000 miles - even Diesels now. (or once a year)

Is it just the US posters on here being told every 3000 to 5000?

Clearly keep an eye on fluid levels at least weekly along with your Tyre wear. If you have any concerns in the meantime, get it checked out.
normally this is now 10,000 miles or 12 months depending on the manufacturers recommendation contact them for details on your particular make and model
if its over 3 years old then every year or every 10`000 miles, which ever comes 1st my friend.
If your a woman?. every 3 months to replace the clutch you burn out
