Ford Mondeo 1.8 LX 1995 - Blown Head Gasket?

I drive a 1995 Ford Mondeo 1.8 LX Estate. I am told i have a blown head gasket. Whats a head gasket and is this going to be expensive to fix? Can anyone suggest a good garage in Harlow?

A blown head gasket can cause overheating and reduced performance, if left it will cause severe problems, most commonly a warped head. Have you started to notice overheating or other stuff going wrong ?

Take off your oil filler cap and also the water headertank cap to see if there is a creamy residue in there. This will tell you if you have got oil and water mixed together, this is a sign of a blown headgasket as the oil and water are leaking across the gasket.

The headgasket is the replaceable piece that sits between the engine block and the head. The block being the thing with the cylinders and crank in it and the head sitting on top with the sparkplugs, cam etc in it. On close inspection when you look at the engine to will notice that it is split into 2 piece, this is the point at which the gasket is sandwiched in between.

If the blown gasket has done nothing else to the engine, it will still be a big job and expensive if you take it to a garage because of the time.

It is time consuming because all the stuff that is attached to the head, exhaust/manufold, cam/timing belts, spark plugs, ignition leads, air intake pipes etc. etc. etc. you can see for yourself when you look at your engine what is involved.

I am not a mechanic but I have changed a few head gaskets and I currently have a golf cabrio with a blown head gasket that I have not got round to changing but I am still driving it because the symtoms are not that bad yet.

If you want to do the work yourself, get yourself a haynes workshop manual, make sure you put plenty of time aside to do the work and dont rush it. A rushed hedgasket change will normally result in it being done all over again quite soon.

If you think about it logically, you are just stripping bits off, lifting the head and replacing the gasket, then putting it all back together. There are a few things that you will need to know that will be in your haynes manual like how to reset the timing if you move something, but if you dont you can just put it all back together and all will be OK.

The only other thing you should need to do will be to clean both of the surfaces (top of block and underside of head) with say wet/dry paper to get the surfaces purfectly flat, and then you also need some gasket sealant.

It will take a while to do the job, but it might be better than forking out hundreds on a mechanics bill.
A new head gasket is not always the most expensive thing to repair, but you need to know what damage it has done to the block. If it has done anything to that, then it wil probably be beyond economical repair (ie the repair is more expensive than the car). But i hope im wrong. Good luck
Yeah, it happened in my car and it was like $800 to fix. If you want my advice: You have a Ford. Ford is crap. I'd just use the money for a down payment on something more reliable.
head gasket are expensive go to a auto store thy might a sealent i did that and it work for a while, some people try pepper, good luck
It will probably be expensive, however the head gasket 'blowing' may have caused other problems.
a headgasket is like the filling in a sandwich between the 2 parts of the engine, the top part of which is the head. the gasket prevents oil & water mixing, retains each cylinder pressure and the fuel/spark.

Eventually of course these can things pack up, with water often ending up in the bores creating plenty of steam and generally overheating the engine. If your lucky, you'll get away with just replacing the gasket, but often due to the overheating, the cylinder head can warp. This requires machining to correct, or it may be cheaper to source a second hand head and replace it.
The head gasket is wat is used to seal the top half of your engine(head) from the bottom (block)! If you take it to a reasonable garage it shouldnt cost u much more than bout £150 £200. A lot of places will charge you well over the odds cause it looks and sounds like a massive procedure so they can get away with it, when in truth its quite straight forward! As long as you havent been driving round with it slowly getting worse for ages you should get away with a straight forward replacement.
Gasket is not expensive about £10-20 but labour cost will push it up.
