removing the back brake drum on a Peugeot 106 1996?
how do you get the back brake drum off the wheel to get to the back brake shoes .Ref above what size of spanner or socket as I will need to buy one I think as I dont think I have a socket large enough to get the big nut off.

Answers:
you could try a large adjustable spanner instead of having a big spanner thats not needed for any nuts while the adjustable will do loads.
Use a hammer, its much quicker!
Some auto stores will ent you a socket for the application or as I have done you can use a pipe wrench.

If I remember rightly its a 30mm but be carefull as those rear drums are a bugger to get off. After removing the nut tap the drum gently with a soft mallet whilst turning it slowly so as to ease it off.Oh and dont forget to torque up the nut when you put it back on it should be tight not like some cars where you only nip them up as this is not a tapered bearing youll see what i mean when you try to undo it I hope youve had your wheatabix!!!
you need to remove the centre nut held behind the dust cap, it prises off. then deadjust teh handbrake or you ll never get the drum off without a lot of banging and grief.

the centre nut is quite big, and it will have some form of locking washer, so dont use brute force, knock the tabs and the nut undoes without 2 foot of leverage. and dont drop the bearing in the dirt.

and brake shoes.only do one side at a time, so when it al goes pear shaped, youve a reference..if youve got a digi cam , or phonecam, use it. it can and will save you hours of why the brakes dont work, and why the springs have to fitted by a gorilla on steroids..

whilst i applaud your intention to do the job yourself, please remember, its your brakes, they are about all that will stop you mashing yourself into the rear of the car in front, so make sure youve done a good job, i say this thru years and years of experience, its not as easy as it looks, oh it is, but only of you know what youre doing.(all us old hands nod sagely in the background)
30 or 32mm, you will have to have a socket and a suitable breaker bar to undo as these are tight.
could be worth putting it into a garage by the time you have bought the tools to do the job.
