1998 Fiat Punto?

Rocker cover gasket. needs replacing, chucking oil all over place Garage want £60 .. gasket is £7.99.. I dont usually touch things I'm not qualified to do but this looks so simple. unclip air filter, take out 4 bolts from rocker cover, wipe down , new gasket in & all back together. check oil level.. is it that simple or am I missing something here. Dont want to start something I cant finish

Answers:
No U appear 2 have covered it all.
Take it from a mechanics Mrs, U know more than most!
Consider some gasket seal in a tube.
Rolls Royce even do 1 it can take the stress outta lining gaskets up.
Make sure U leave it the required amount of time B4 U put the Rocker Cover back on & drive gently until U can trust UR handy work.
Cool?
Hope that helps.
& I agree with Efcsted above.
BUY a manuel 4 the torque wrench settings.
If U don't understand which ones 2 tighten up first U can louse it all up @ the end.
The Book should tell U.
thats it, you really cant go wrong
it really is that simple. make sure you tighten the 4 bolts back the correct torque settings though. a haynes manual and a torque wrench will sort it
it sounds like you have got it about right
Yes it's that easy. But I would use some silicone on both sides of the gasket. A thin layer is all ways good 4 a better bond.
thats about it. you must remember to clean both gasket faces, that means flat and spotless. (any crap or old gasket whatsoever, and itll be a waste of time as it will chuck oil everywhere.) and when you retighten the new gasket, dont overdo it. if its cork, a smear of oil on both faces wont go amiss, if its neoprene rubber, theres no need. tighten the bolts/nuts /screws down evenly and diagonally opposite starting from the out edges and working inwards, bit by bit. dont tighten bolt 1 until it cany go no more and expect the other 3 to pull the gasket down.

and thats about it. and 60 quid is cheap. fords in coventry charge £85 an hour plus vat. its always better to do the work yourself, but remember, be safe. let the engine cool first. oh, and when you remove the HT leads, please mark them, or your car will never start again if you put them back in any other order. the rotation is stamped on the rotor arm in the distributor cap.

good luck. oh, and ive just read some comments.DO NOT USE INSTANT GASKET.its for bodging. rolls royces hylomar, lovely stuff, until you put a smidgeon too much on the faces, and it squeezes out, turns into a gooey mess and clogs your oil pump, seconds before it scraps your engine.

in fact, if you use instant gasket, dont use a real one. and yo can get just as good a job using silicone sealant from the poundshop. not that id reccoment it in anything other than an emergency.
It is simple just take your time and make sure everything goes back whence it came from .
you got it, the nly thing i would suggest is to get some loctite gasket cement and smear a little on the four surfaces after you have cleaned it the two metal bits
think the garage are having a laugh i cant see anymore than 30 quid max in that job
you got everything right there except i would recomend that you use a red type gasket sealer about £2 from your local car spares shop and tighten the bolts down finger tight then a quarter of a turn with a spanner to avoid over tightening the bolts and crushing the gasket if you dont have a torque wrench
