Can speed cameras penalise you for anything other than speeding?

My boyfriend went through a set of lights when they were yellow and as he passed them, they turned red - the speed camera clicked him.will he get penalised?

Answers:
The misinformation some people give on this site scares me!

There are cameras for traffic lights too, these will take your pic if you go through a Red or Amber traffic light, they can also tell you what speed you were doing when you did it.
Yes.
It is penalized not penalised.
depends on how fast he was going.. you dont get photo's for going through red lights..
If it was the light on the top of the traffic light, then yes. They are not speed cameras, they monitor the traffic lights for people going through on red/amber.
Speed cameras are the ones with the lines on the road.
Yes. They can penalise you for running a light and it also checks your speed.

Expect a fine in the post. Amber lights mean stop if safe to do so, not put your foot down to get through before they turn red.

Some other drivers watch the wrong lights to see them go amber and then they go before their own have gone green. Its and accident waiting to happen.

EDIT

It is penalized in USA, penalised in UK!
there are two types.
1 for speed and 1 for jumping the lights.
sorry!

PS. trollhair
this is a question in the UK, and we speak the queens English which means no z's instead of s's!!

yes he should not be an amber gambler
Possibly, it depends on whether the camera was fully operational, which a lot aren't. There are cameras for traffic lights, speeding, bus lanes and box junctions. (I'm sure there's others, but these are the well known ones). It sounds like the one he triggered was not a speed camera but one designed to detect people jumping the traffic lights. If it was operational he'll get a fine and 3 points.
it depends if it had film in it. as daft as this sound its true. if he,s lucky he wont get a penalty as the flash still works even if there is no film in it. if the camera had taken lots of pics that day then he,ll b scott free. if its the digital cameras tho it still might get him. unless he can go back 2 the camera & "fix" the situation. not that i condone that sort of thing.
They can penalize you for driving in the wrong direction, road rage, inconsideration, following extremely close and a host of other reprobations.
your not supposed to pass through traffic lights when thy are amber,so he deserves to get punished.
Well then dearie. they were traffic signal cameras then and not speed cameras, so he will definately get a fine and 3 pts..

Yellow does not mean. hurry up and get through them. I would suggest your boyfriend refresh himself on the highway code and traffic signals.
it wasnt a speed camera then it would be a traffic signal camera. and yes if he ran the red light he will get fined unless he can proove that there was a great danger to the traffic behind him if he did.

Also an amber light does not mean put your foot down to see if you can make it through in time it means STOP just as a red light.
he will receive a kind letter from the police by Monday.. and yes,, if someone is such a a***ole, to be using a phone when the camera takes the picture, they would be done for that too.. speed cameras are a GREAT invention..

and in response to another answerer.. "if the camera had film in it".. they are Professional digital camera's with 200GB memory built in. millions of stills.
No, it only records speed. However some cameras now have CCTV on them directly linked to police stations, but again he would have been stopped shortly after if at all.
yes, coz it wasnt a speed camera, more a traffic light camera.its supposed to flash you if u go through red lights.those ones dont catch u for speed though..tried it out.
yup, he's done..

He'll get a form through the post in about a week with a photo of the offence..

NEXT TIME DONT GAMBLE WITH YOUR LIFE!
Yes, it will be a light camera not a speed camera. And the final answer of -ise/ -ize is that either is acceptable in the UK - Oxfoird has, in fact, always favoured the use of '-ize'.
yes and thats not a speed camera thats a camera on traffic lights speed camerasonly take your reg and speed your going
Assuming you are in the UK then a speed camera can only penalise you for speeding. However cameras at traffic lights are to catch anyone going through on red. So he may have been caught. If he has then he will get a letter through the post within 14 days informing of the impending prosecution. He will then get a chance to either accept three points on his license and a £60 fine or go to court.
The former is the best course of action unless he believes he is innocent and can prove so.

Oh and please don't correct our spelling, don't forget the language is called english for a reason. Just because you guys over the pond chose to spell words incorrectly doesn't make it right : )
police can use footage like cctv, to get evidence. if u were to vandalise a speed camera and caught in the act.
