Answers:
Renault clio nice little first time cars.
Try a wheeliebin with an engine
ford focus is a super car and well worth being your first car, good choice.
Ford Fiesta. Nice, reliable little cars. Plus smaller engine re the road tax & your insurance. My brother has a 1.25 zetec. Fab car.
One that's PAID for.
hyundai elantra very peppy engine, low maintenance first five years, low price lots of features. not a good car after about 6-8 years though.
It depends on how much money you have to spend on a car and also the insurance. Are you planning to learn to drive in it? If so get some thing with a smallish engine other wise you will get stung with insurance. I personally dont like older fiestas, they tend to go wrong a lot but a focus, corsa or punto are nice cheap cars to run. I find the punto the easiest to work on if your going to service and repair it yourself (hence why I have one). Hope this helps..
best first time car is one you dont mind binning after 6 mounths, first 6 mounths you will be finding your limits, hopefully not hurting anyone in the prosses, when you've wrapped it round a tree or blown the engine you should learn from it.once you've got that out the way get a decent car you can afford not one that will put you in debt. by the way i teach people to drive so i know that as soon as you get that licince everything i teach you goes out of the window til that first prang or very near miss. remember what you where taught and prove me wrong.
I'm thinking an old-style Volkswagen Beetle (ie, the original, not the Golf-based pseudo-copy) for a variety of reasons:

1. They're cheap - cheap to buy, cheap to insure.

2. They're different - they don't look like all the hatchbacks around, and they sound unmistakable, due to the aircooled engine.

3. They were the last volume production car with running boards.

4. Parts are easier to replace than with almost any other car, as they're all screwed on. You want a new wing? Unbolt it and screw on another.

5. Age: cars over a certain age are exempt from road tax. Most Beetles are.

6. They feel as if they're from another era: primitive, different, slow, full of character. This is good and bad: bad, because you don't have all mod cons or even a few mod cons (CD player? Air conditioning? Power steering? Ha! Even a tape deck is unlikely). Good, because when you one day graduate to something bigger, faster, more in tune with modern living, you'll look back on your old Bug and recall it fondly - something you'll never do with a Ford Focus.

So for a perfect combination of cheap mobility and characterful individuality, go for a Beetle.

And you know what? My extremely hip young goddaughter assures me they're 'way cool', whatever that means.

PS - If you're not tempted by a Beetle, I wouldn't go for a modern VW, no matter how reliable they are (and they are) - the cost of parts is outrageous. Also Italian cars are traditionally unreliable - having owned three I can confirm that! A small Ford (not a Focus - too expensive to insure) or Japanese runabout would make sense - reliable and cheap to insure. Or one of the other brands of the VW group: Seat (Spanish) or Skoda (Czech). Same VW reliability at lower prices.

Good luck with your search.
you can build a box car using an old baby pram and some wood,
or go to Toy r us n buy a peddle car.
NOT the Renualt Clio - who said that - their maintenance is ridiculous!

as boring as they are, a small VW or Toyota.reliable beyond reason and cheap to repair..the VW Lupo Diesel has incredible fuel economy..
Ariel Atom. May not be the most logical choice but it would certainly be better than most other options!!
hi there to be honest with you a ford focus is a bit ambitious for a 1st time car there is a few blind spots in it also the insurance will be quite high because two years ago i wanted the same but just found it a bit to big for a 1st car also insurance was very dear i would go for something a bit smaller bit less power and relatively cheap if you hav a knock in it it wont be as heart breaking i ended up with a ford fiesta 1.1i now got an escort 1.6i 16v its best to work your way up good luck
A ford focus for your first car isn't a good choice. You want something with a smallish engine that'll be cheap to insure. A ford focus will be neither of these! Plus you're more likely to have an accident in your first year of driving so I'd buy an older car which wouldn't be such a disaster if you hit something.

Whatever you do DON'T GET A FIAT TIPO.
I started off in an Austin 1100 and would still be driving it now (20 years later) if the gearbox had nor seized on the way to the MOT
this one is easy!! any car that you are happy with as long as it is in good condition. and you plan on takeing care of it!
i had a corsa and it was perfect.
