I have a mk1 clio that makes an awful grinding/grating sound if put on full lock, reverse or forwards, makes no difference. Someone said my wheels are rubbing in the archs but it hasn't been lowered at all. It does have 15" BBS Alloys on it and they are wider than normal tyres. Maybe this is the problem although i can't see why as i've seen other clio's like this that have had no mods done to wheel archs and they don't have my problem. Could it be something else?
Answers:
almost certain to be your wheels, you can check for this in two ways,
Put the car on full lock, can you get your hand between the inside edge of the tyre and the inner wheel arch, IMPORTANT, have two people sat in the car, if you cant then the wheels are too wide. Are there any marks on the wheel arch? If both OK then its your CV joints, not wheel bearings, they make a noise in a straight line
Could be your transmission - I THINK its what makes the grinding noise when you struggle to change gear. If its breaking down it may begin to grind even when in gear.
could be brakes, cv joints or wheels!
