Will my car be damaged after putting petrol in a deisel engine?
Answers:
yes my mother in law did the same thing last year, did you drain the petrol tank straight away?
Yes and will cost you a fortune to repair!
Yes! What were you thinking?
yes.drain the petrol as soon as possible..your engine is not designed for it.
yes! sorry to say -
it helps if you don't turn the engine on, but i guess you have already done that?
did you try and start it ? if you didnt then its not too bad , not as bad as diesel in a petrol engine anyway
Yes, seek prof. help now !
You will need to drain it out immediately. It is not as bad as the other way round. Putting diesel into a petrol engine is far worse and causes more damage.
I did the same and drove it as well. Called AA and had to have it drained, once it was out and I had filled it it was fine.
Once drained fill your car up and fill it up again when it gets to three quarters and it will be fine.
Yes diesel burns slower and diesel fuel acts as lube for the engine gas will f u ck it up!
Been there, done that! The garage had to drain the tank and the blokes gave me the 'stupid women' look. It was one of those moments when you wish the ground would open
no, it won't be damaged it will be fooked!
if you dont start the engine then maybe you can get away with it but probably u have in which case your xxxxxx
yes but if you drain it straight away and fill up the car with diesel, the car should run okay. I did this once, filled it to the neck with petrol, drove it for 10 miles until it conked out. The mechanic simply drained the petrol out and filled it up with diesel and hey presto, no probs. is it an old car ot relatively new?
It will cost you a pretty penny to have the tank and all the fuel lines drained beside the cost of new filters.
It can damage the engine but it depends on how much petrol you put in relative to the amount of diesel. If there is only a small concentration of petrol you might get away with it. THe best thing to do though is not start the engine and have the tank drained. I know that you cannot put diesel in a petrol car due to the size of the nozzle but that doesn't prevent this mistake from happening. Perhaps the Nozzles (and the filler holes in cars) need to different shapes?
Don't turn on the engine whatever you do! You'll be looking at replacing the whole engine assembly other wise!
..no, but it will not run because there is no spark to ignite the gasoline.diesel automatically bursts into flame under pressure.you will have to drain out all the gas and bleed all the gas out of the lines, change the fuel filter(s) then refill with diesel and after you get all the air out of the fuel lines it will again run as it did before with no permanant damage. it's truly suprising how little people know about cars but will give advice in a minute
Depends on how new your car is and how much you have run it with wrong fuel in.
As long as you haven't run it. I did the same thing with my brand new Astra aftre only 3 weeks last year. As long as you get it drained and keep the diesel topped up for a few tank loads you'll be alright.
That's if you haven't started it. I think it can cause damage otherwise.
They did a test of this on a car programme like top gear or 5th gear. it isn't actually that bad. you do need to drain it though. probably could do it yourself without ruining you car.
Not if it's a very small amount
Like less than 1/2 gal.
We used to add petro to diesel trucks to help clean the injectors.
With 100 gals of diesel we would add 2 gals of petro
But not at every fill up
If you added more than 2 gals than your car may not even run,if it does keep adding diesel to your tank until the fuel has been burnt
every time you go for a ride top the tank off.
depends how old your car is. older cars are much more tolerant of this, because the engines are not are highly tunned, however deisel can tolerate 20% of petrol. I personally would just fill the tank full of desiels and see how it goes- getting it pumped costs alot!
DO NOT TRY TO RUN THE ENGINE!! It will blow the head off the engine.
You're going to have to drain and clean the gas tank and purge the fuel lines and injectors. Even a little gasoline in a diesel can cause a lot of very expensive damage.
Yep! the diesel acts as a lubricant as well as fuel within certain parts of the injection system.Petrol on the other hand has no lubricating propertys. diesel is a compression fuel so your engine runs at a higher compression ratio than a petrol so if you put petrol in a diesel it will wearout parts in the injection system and also it will knock extremely loudly before destroying itself in a cloud of smoke!
Turn it off, call a mechanic and do some overtime your going to need the money! sorry
most cars you will get away with draining the tank and a new fuel filter, certain mercedes however require new tanks and fuel lines so if you have one of these get it drained and move it on very quickly
That depends.
How old is the car?
What type of injection system does the engine have?
Did you start the engine? If so, how long did you run it for.
An older car, with mechanical distributor-pump indirect injection will probably survive a few minutes running with just a little bit of extra wear.
A newer car, with high-pressure common-rail direct injection will probably have damaged pumps and injectors after only a few seconds running, due to their closer tolerances and higher pressures.
as long as you did not drive it far you will have to get it pumped about 80 quid for that fill it up with petrol it may smoke for a time but will soon clear it self out
yes as u will nacker up ur cat-coverter amoung other things
I DID THIS A COUPLE OF MONTHS AGO , MY G/F WASNT IMPRESSED AS IT WAS HER CAR . PUT 20 POUNDS OF UNLEADED IN , THE CAR DIDNT LIKE IT MUCH BUT IT KEPT ON RUNNING WITH NO LASTING EFFECT THANKFULLY , WAS JUST V SLUGGISH FOR A WEEK OR SO. ...LUCKILY WASNT THE OTHER WAY ROUND THEN YOU WOULD HAVE PROBS...
No, it wont. Diesel engines are much stronger than petrol and are designed for higher compression. Also as ther is no spark then petrol wont exploed under pressure inthe same way deisel does.
So, to fix. hard way. take out tank, flush it through, remove all filters and replace, flush all pipelines, remove and clean all injectors.. put it all back together.
Easy fix. this depends on car.. but remove fuel line from the spill rail in engine bay. This is where the fuel line ends up after leaving the tank. Find +ve on the fuel pump. Connect +ve to a 12volt power supply. This will run the fuel pump. Empty tank via fuel line into a suitable container. dispose of sensibly.
Once empty, put in some diesel. run fuel pump till diesel comes out of line. re attach to spill rail/common rail and start car.
if its a Peugeot the +ve is the blue wire uber the rear seat cushion.
Just on a similar subject if you accidentally put the wrong sort of fuel in your vehicle then you should consider a claim on your comprehensive insurance if it is quite an expensive job. Accident damage is covered under an insurance policy.
