The manual says they are listed on the case of the cover - no they aren't and no matter where I've looked I can't find out which fuse does what? I know what the fuses do inside the passenger door, but not the engine ones.

Did you buy it from your local Renault dealer? If so just ask them. That's part of the customer service they should be giving you. If not ask them anyway. :)
My opinion is you shouldn't need to worry about the ones in the engine anyway but if you really want or need to know which ones do what, they can help. Good luck.
Try removing the fuses one at a time and then seeing what won't work, other than that it's time to buy a Haynes manual.
