Why would the brake pedal go all the way to the floor when applied?

I have to pump the brake pedal several times before braking effect is felt.

Answers:
you have air in the pipes.

.and if you don't understand it or don't want to do it, take the car to a garage & geti it fixed NOW! (before you kill someone)
Very low on Brake fluid!

Check right away!
Other possibilty Brakes waaaay out of adjustment.

My money is on very low Brake fluid!
The brake fluid is low - get your car to a garage straight away there could be a leak somewhere.
get ur brakes checked very dangerous
Go to a machanic, this can be dangerous, the chances are you have a leaking brake cylinder which means you are loosing hydraulic pressure and this could even leave you with total brake failure -not a good situation to find yourself in!
Get it fixed..
Sounds like your brake fluid needs topping up or replacing totally as it is hydroscopic (absorbs water). You might want to get your brake pads checked out too!
Low brake fluild
Discs / pads need replacing
Broken brake pipes

There are a few more reasons all bad.

Tow it to a garage
Air in the brake pipes and lack of fluid. Your car needs to have the brake fluid topped up and all the brakes bled to get the air out of the system. Until this is done your car is unsafe and should not be driven. If you drive it in this condition you are liable to kill somebody, especially if a pedestrian steps off the kerb in front of you. Get your car sorted out and get it sorted out quickly and don't drive it on public roads (unless driving very slowly to the garage) until it is fixed.
This problem can only occur when you either have no brake fluid in your reserve tank. Lift the bonnet and look at the little container, it must be full. a jar of brake fluid is between £-7.00.
Failing this you have a burst brake cylinder that is leaking fluid, your brakes are probably airlocked.
Check your brake fluid level first, this usually does the trick.
Brake cylinders for most cars are about £15.00 each and can be fitted by yourself if you are handy, but if not sure, let a pro do the work, but don't let them rip you off, this is not a major, major process.

It could be a number of reasons check you have brake fluid in the resovoir if you dont you have a leak if their is fluid you most pbally have a faulty master cylinder take it to your nearest garage.
I had the same problem, and had to replace the master cylinder. either way get it to the shop before you lose all braking ability.
could be brake fluid loss, or shoes worn out, get to the garage dont take any chances
Take your car to a garage ASAP for VERY URGENT attention to the braking system ! The brake system needs a check to see if leaking or if air is in the pipeline - 'bleeding' and filling with new hydraulic fluid may be needed, the brake discs and/or pads may need either replacing or adjustments. Your life, and that of others, is in your hands! Get it seen too NOW!
Most Likely Air in brake fluid system.
(probably due to leak)
GET it FIXED Today !!
If your car has disk brakes there is no adjustment required. I didnt see you mention bleeding the brakes or priming the master cyl? or making sure the actuator rod is to corrrect length and adjustment, to be honest if your power assist is leaking you will see some brake fluid on firewall area usually. the rear brakes also were not mentioned. To be perfectly honest with you? take the vehicle to a brake shop if you are trying to work beyond your experience. As there are 2 things one should never guess at #1 steering #2 brakes either of these can be a fatal mistake. Good Luck!.
The wheels could be getting hot due to the wheel bearings being worn and causing friction. Don't drive this car until you have had it all repaired.
Air in hydraulic system best bet could also be a leak any where in system please get it checked .
Assuming the new master brake cylinder is good and you don't have any brake fluid leaks from the lines or wheel cylinders, then you need to have your brake hydraulic system bled to remove air in the brake system in my opinion. Make sure to purge all the old brake fluid from all of the lines.
you brakes have shot it
I totally agree with all other answers GET IT FIXED NOW
may have air in lines..could have blown rear wheel cylinders if u have those
