How many people are prosecuted annually for smoking on the London Underground?
Answers:
A big fat zero.
You might be asked to put it out, you might even be asked to leave the station but you will never be prosecuted.
Not enough!
Nobody smokes there.
Nothing like enough.
It's one of those bye-laws that is almost self-policing because the tide of public opinion is so weighted against smoking on the Tube that no-one dares break it.
It's almost a perfect example of how galvanizing the views of the silent majority can enforce a law. In 15 years of living in London I've never once seen anyone smoking on the Underground .
Gosh! I don't know where everyone else lives/travels, but I see peope smoking on the underground every now and then. BUT. then again this is at the East end of the District Line (Dagenham, Becontree, Barking etc), and generally whilst the train is travelling above ground. They are usually teenagers or in their early twenties, and always male. There's something about this area.
Anyhow, that whole silent, disapproving glances thing is more likely to get you punched or stabbed than make them put it out.
