Just bought a 323i with ASC fitted how does this work and is it a better drive with it switched on or off??

Answers:
It works out which wheel has the most grip and feeds more power to that wheel and less to the slipping wheel.

If you drive permanently as if you were trying to win a stage of a rallye, then turn it off, if not and you drive like the rest of us, leave it on, it will save tyres and other bits and pieces.

Don't forget to turn all your front fog lights on all the time like all other BMW drivers though!! Because all other drivers think you're far cooler than them if you have front fog lights.
Its traction control. (Automatic Stability Control)

Keep it switch on (ie don't press the button) or else you'll end up wrapped around a tree one cold morning.
Good question. I have a '01 540i w/ manual trans and the tires will light-up very easily. I normally keep mine turned off as my mechanic says the clutches for the ASC are in the rear differential and when the ASC engages it is actually wearing down these clutches. Now in the wet is a totally different story, you want to keep the system on. So just be a little lighter on the accelerator and you will save your tires, differential and most of all gas.
ASC(AUTO STABILITY CONTROL)WORKS IN CONJUNCTION WITH YOUR ABS BRAKES.TRACTION CONTROL..AND STEERING..KIND OF TIES IT ALL TOGETHER FOR BETTER HANDLING AND TRACTION.LEAVE IT ON ALL THE TIME..(LIGHT WILL BE OFF WHEN IT IS ON)YOU WILL SEE THE SYSTEM FLICKER WHEN THE WHEELS SLIP AND THE SYSTEM ASSISTS THE TRACTION..TURN IT OFF ONLY TO GET OUT OF DEEP SNOW.LIKE IF YOU NEED TO ROCK THE CAR OUT OF A SNOW BANK..
It"s RWD,keep it on,unless the conditions are perfect and you"re xtra carefull.
Turn it off if you know what your doing and yopu want to have fun. I have it on my 530 sport and in the dry it cuts in all the time when it isn't needed. In the wet however it is a god send.
ASC uses technology from the helicopter industry, it has yaw sensor, the yaw is much the car is turning around an axis, this is then compared to how your turning the steering wheel, the control unit then works out if your going to get around the corner or not, if your not it it will back the engine power off, if your still not going to get around the corner it will put individual brakes on to help steering you around the corner, and it does this in about 20Milli seconds so its pretty clever, but switch it off if you want to have fun, just don't forget to protect your no claims, remember sideways is the best way forward!
