i believe i have been mis sold a vehicle by a JCT garage. I bought the car including a cherished plate and since buying it have been informed by the dvla that the reg was mistakenly assigned and that the keeper should not have disposed of the vehicle until it had received the correct log book. the garage is claiming it is not responsible denies that the plate has any value and refuses to offer any compensation. during negotiations the saleman said to me that the plate is worth "at least £500" but I have no witness to this. is there a governing body to whom I can register a complaint and seek compensation.
regards

your local trading standards office would be my first port of call
SMMT, Society of Motor Manufactures & Traders
RMIF Retail Motor Industry Federation. (I think this is right)
Most reputable dealers are registered with at least one of the above, but also local tradings standards is worth a call, or just threaten (not physically) to call the local press. No dealer likes bad publicity.
Anything a salesman says that is not written into the contract is worthless.
