Saab 9-3 Aero, has more power via a turbo'ed engine than the Astra (GM copied the in-house design), not as common as a BMW, doesn't have the image problem either. Good handling too.
if it has such bad reviews why do you want to buy it? i note that your present car (not named) is uncommon. maybe it is more important for you to drive something a little different no matter how bad it is? personally i know ford and all the german makes are very common but then can the vast majority of consumers be wrong? up to you mate!

I dont know about the Astra VTR but I have an Astra SXR and its been one of the best cars I've owned (and there have been a few!!) Its got plenty of the 'modern' feature , electric pack, AC, CD player, all its missing is a heated windscreen

What about the new Honda Civic Type-R? I have a 2 year old version and took the Astra VXR out for a test drive - the VXR was boring compared to the Type-R, I would seriously consider taking one out for a test drive - due March 2007,
fancy a classic? if i had the money id buy a lotus carlton, saw one on ebay today had been more as less totally reworked mechanically. and yours for less than 20 grand. theyre bloody rare and youd get to drive a car that was the fastest production saloon in the world for a very very long time. plus its a classic so you get a 377bhp monster for next to no insurance costs. you get all the toys air con, leather interior, 6 speed box. this car pissed off ferrari so much when it first came out it was faster than their testarossa, only the lambo countach was quicker. i have to agree with you too many people love german cars just because theyre german.

The Mazda is a bit girlie, The Astra is just rubbish.. Looks ok but awfull to drive.. The New Civic type R is a good suggestion or Alfa 156 2.4JTD - a quick comfortable diesel.
Do you mean the VXR? If so then it's not a bad car at all, and the handling i smuch better than people give it credit for. Just be aware that regardless of the clever clogs diffs featured in the ST and Golf, you just can't effectively plant that much through the front wheels and expect it to be fluent.
The MPS is not a girls car, contrary to what somebody earlier said, and a certain motoring press recently tested one, where it was more than able to keep pace with the Subaru WRX. That in itself is a feat.
I'd plumb to take a look at the new Leon Cupra, it's essentially a golf, but it's prettier, handles better, and is about 3k cheaper. Certainly something of a Q car too, particularly the diesel which, despite being slower to 60 (as all diesels are) it will actually do the 50 - 70 (a good measure of overtaking ability) QUICKER than a Subaru WRX.
You can also buy a 200bhp Diesel Version of the Astra Sports hatch from BTCC tuners.Crushingly quick, and through the gears it's nigh on as fast a Mitsubishi EVO 340.

i currently have the golf r32, my friend has just bought the new focus st and when put to the test it pisses all over my golf. vw are a totally class car but to my cost have realised not worth the money.depending on your budget i really would have a look at a scooby, there just a **** to insure.
Golf is nice . but since you like the vauxhall, you can also try the Lotus Elise too.
