Why do we have to have car insurance in the UK?

Why cant you chose whether you have insurance or not?

Answers:
personally I think were being ripped off for out car insurance. not only that they add on charges if you miss a payment and stuff and they know you can't argue it with them coz they will just stop your insurance and you cant drive legally without it. Also if your 3rd party and therefor insuring for damage to other people's property why does the cost go up if yuo have a nicer car which might not go as fast as other cars on the road that cost less to insure?
to pay the third party when it's your fault - insurance is mainly for other road users.
you can chose NOTE to have insurance, but if you have a crash, you would have to pay a lot more than if you DID have insurance.
it covers both you and other people, so that you can claim of one another's insurance depending on the circumstances.

is UK the only country to have to get insurance then?
Its all down to one man years ago who ran into someones fence and then refused to pay for its repair, it was then decided you could insure against this type of thing and the whole nasty business spiralled from there, it is now law for you to have insurance, minimum standard being Third party, meaning causing damage to the property of a third party.
well who is going to pay for an accident that is your fault if you don't have the dosh. A drunk unlicenced uninsured teenager nearly killed me and my friend and we had to write of our car which we were restoring because he wrecked it. As he wasn't insured we got nothing and legally all he had to do was pay a small amount each month because that is all he had.
That's a good point actually.

You don't HAVE to have life insurance or contents insurance do you??

Maybe it's set up so that if you damage someone elses car they're guaranteed to get the damage paid for. I guess with other types of insurance you're just insuring your own stuff aren't you, but with car insurance you're insuring other people's cars should you crash into one of them.
because the price's of your vehicles are so bloody low. if they sold cars at that price, with no insurance, nobody would make money..
It is quite right that you have to have 3rd party insurance - unless you could show that you had at least, say, a million pounds in the bank to setlle a compensation claim from someone who might be paralysed or otherwise permanently injured by your mistake.

What I do think is wrong is when companies will only insure you on a comprehensive basis (which many do, above a certain value of car). We should all have the freedom to take whatever financial risks we like with our own property.
Could you afford to pay for a new Roller or have a bus repaired and reimburse for all other losses out of your own pocket if you had no insurance and were the cause of such damage?
Bit of a daft question really, isn't it, when you think about it, which you obviously haven't!
Because Blair is not the first to run a "Nanny State"
