seems like nobody is reading the question right.
If the engine is being turned over by the starter motor then you can discount both the starter and the battery.
look for the distributor cap which is usually black and dome shaped. take it off and look at the four brass pegs on the inside.
If they are black or burnt try cleaning off until you see bare metal and then do the same to the rotor arm which is in the bit you uncovered when you took the cap off.
put it all back together.
try it again.
If it still won't start then take out a plug and hold it with some insulated pliers against the cylinder head. Get someone to crank it and check for a good spark. if you,ve go that then you have fuel problems if you haven't then check the leads to all the plugs and the ht leadgoing to the coil.
if they seem ok then buy a new dizzy cap and rotor arm and retry.
If its fuel try opening the fuel cap. sometimes you get a vacuum forming
After thst I'm stuck.

sounds like the battery is dead, try getting a jump from someone
try cleaning the connections
alternator
Do you hear the sound of igniting fuel? If not, then you're not getting fuel in the engine or you're not getting sparks. Check the fuel pressure, then try testing the battery or try boosting the car from a running one. If the lights in the car are on, you have power. If they're dim, the battery is low on power. Try loosening the fan belt and see if the alternator can spin or if it's siezed. And just make sure that the spark plugs are connected in the right order, unless you didn't disconnect them.
Looks like you have a stuck bendix drive.which is an extension to the starter motor. Try rotating the starter motor in opposite direction, or if you do not have access to the motor then try it on the engine/fan (careful - disconnect the battery before this) and then retry. It might do the trick if the bendix is just stuck but if its broken then you will have to replace it.
Check your ground cable and clean it at both ends, bad ground?

If the lights dim when you try it then its probably the starter, solenoid or relay ( if ithas a relay )

to check the starter just put a jumper cable from + (pos) on the battery to the starter terminal if it turns over its not the starter ( this can be done with the key off or on.
if the battery is charged, put the car in gear and rock it forward and back, take out of gear and try starting.
Or get a decent piece of wood and give the starter motor a tap whilst you have someone try and start it.
Make sure its out of gear if your stood infront of it though.

just reading your question again, can you clarifydoes the engine actually turn over but wont fire or is the starter just clicking when you try and start
There is an Engine Earth Strap which is connected somewhere between the back of the gearbox, and the chassis.
It's normally a braded wire, when you find it, try and turn the engine over, if it's turning slow, stop the ignition, and feel the wire, but be careful, if that has got a bad connection, it will get very hot. If it's that, then it has to be disconnected, the connections have to be cleaned, put it back, and try again.
Hope this helps
could be the alternator, u need the alternator to charge the battery which would explain y the light is on, and it could also be the motor for the fan..
