It's the sloane ranger and woolly old dad choice of car.
Volvo was always a little agricultural, used by farmers etc it is trying to break away from that image, not doing to bad now Ford have taken it from the Swedes. How many bales of hay can you get in yours?
Volvo drivers used to be considered the worst for cutting you up and general bad driving. A good car though.
Volvo drivers also had the ancient, senile old fool in a big coat and a flat cap image. That wasn't helped by the old giffer who drove his Volvo off the top of a multi-storey car park. Also, as a motorcyclist, as well as a car driver, it's generally Volvo drivers who want to smash into you, probably because they are driven by coffin-dodgers who are deaf and blind.
Volvo also has a negative image as it's the car of choice of the police in general. Just because the police use them, it doesn't necessarily lend Volvos any kudos.

Used to be used to haul sheep around by guys that couldn't get a girlfriend and wouldn't go into a porn shop. Now very good cars but rarely work. Owned by GM who only know how to build cars to break down!!
20 years ago us Volvo driver's were considered road bullies. We could nudge other cars with our big rubber bumpers without causing any damage. We didn't really cut people up, they just got out of the way!
I've had 5 Volvos and I think they're fantastic.
