What you have described is typical of a control unit / receivers for a fixed car phone. BMW factory fit fixed car phone and Motorola used use credit car size sim cards. If you can see it without taking off any trims it wasn't fitted at the factory so could be removed. Check for screw holes in the centre console where a phone may of been fitted .The other option is that your car has a tracker fitted, but again they are usually well hidden.

That will most likely be your ECM box. ECM= Electric Control Module.
Try looking in a "CHILTONS". "Haynes" are good, but "Chiltons" is better.
i think it's for BMW service mechanics to do a diagnosis. there's a few things you can't do yourself on a beamer.
