You are a person after my own heart! I know it seems like a petty subject but it's been really getting to me lately. It seems like all of a sudden there's been a huge increase in these blo**dy monstrosities! Me and my husband were counting the other day and approximately every fourth car going past was a 4x4. Why do people like these cars? I would walk to school if I could but I have to make two trips to two different schools within 10 minutes and would love to walk to get away from these horrid "tanks". Another thing that annoys me is that you can't see around them or in front of them and I think they are dangerous. I'm not jealous because they scream "look at me, I keep up with The Jones' " and it's very sad. Most of the people who drive them only have one or two children and they basically have them to show off how (non) important they are. It's a status thing and it's pathetic. Get them off our roads! Sorry rant over!
Yeah, like someone trailering in their motorcycle. Oh my!! I'm with you. I have a 4x4, and I love to take it off road.
Makes them important of course!
because they are based on farm vehicles and so never breakdown
Chelsea tracktors!
Most 4 X 4 drivers wouldnt know a tow bar from an eyeliner!
they are just plain stupid when comes to buying a car
I don't drive one, but I'll take a guess. Maybe they "think" 4 wheel drive will help them on snow and ice.
Why do people keep Corvettes locked in a garage for years?

Why do people drive Ferrari's like grandmas?

Why do people put chrome 20"s on sports cars and 26"s on 4x4 trucks?

These answers as well as yours, may never be known, though your question is pretty broad.

I had an AWD Subaru and loved it, control and response, as well as supreme traction in adverse conditions.

Might also have something to do with other short comings =)
cause they are all posers who like to be noticed in LARGE motors. have you ever watched them trying to park in supermarket car parks?? great fun!
Because you have better visability when you are high up, you are safer in a car accident and they are comfortable and stylish (well if you have a landrover or bmw that is) x
they have them because they like them, they pay the extra cost for the vehicle the extra fuel they use, higher insurance and more road tax, so if they want them what business is it of yours?
The only logical reason is safety, other than that these things are inefficient, polluting and a waste of space within an urban environment.
its nice to use in the winter when driving through the snow
It's so they can block my view when I drive behind them. Grrrrr
i don't have any kids so I don't do the school run. But I do tow boat trailers and that is the reason I have one. It's been converted to gas so is more environmentally friendly than most other guzzlers. Oh. and I get a better view over the hedges!
green welly brigade
A substitute for a small willy. And that's just the women
Because with 4 wheel drive, your not limited by any unforscene situation, i.e. earthquake, mudslide, pooring rain, huricane, ect.Better to be prepaired.
it is all status and image althoiugh my supervisor drove off road in one untentionally through a hedge and flipped it onto its roof and over again.
her four by four probably saved her life so they have benefits.

at least they have to pay more tax, hee!hee! hee!
Cuz they think they are cool.even though they look like fools!
Sheep.
Why do people gripe about 4x4s so much?

I have a medium 4x4, a Toyota RAV-4. I need it as I live in the Highlands of Scotland and we get quite a bit of snow here in the winter. Being the Highlands it is also rather hilly. I live in a remote area and cannot afford to be stranded by a cissy car.

I get 47 mpg so that squashes any argument about being gas guzzlers. I had an Avensis once and that did less miles to the gallon than the RAV-4.

I am short and appreciate the higher driving position as I can see better.

The road tax is the same as a car, my insurance was only £157 this year, fully comp., as I have 21 years no-claim bonus.

A 4x4 is more rugged and capable of towing anything should I ever need to.

It will take the dog, shopping, people - all at once. I don't have any kids, so don't blame me about the school run.

Please stop moaning about them. They are great and I wouldn't have anything else.
It is to make up for.ummm, shortcomings in other areas.
Because they want you to think they do. I have had four wheel drives for the past thirty years and have explored most of the California and Baja California Deserts with them. If you think my 4x4's have been used and abused you are right. I have seen none of the wanna be's out where I go. In fact, I have not seen hardly anyone on the Mojave trail.
I agree completely! If it's 4x4 beat on it some more! They don't know a tow-strap from a bra strap. I have killed many parts while off-roading that's the fun of owning a 4x4.
I do a lot of skiing in the winter and so I use my 4x4 so I don't have to bother with the chains. Other than that, I'm the person blocking your view or tailing you. GET OUT WAY, MOVE !!!
Its a foolish status symbol
its about stature. ppl think by driving a glorified tractor they will be taller think back to punk,s with their tall Mohawks. aside from that the machines will cut through any thing they ever hit. i saw one parked in the front of a house. they are dangerous mostly oversize and useless for anything but pulling trailers they should be banned like in Paris. if u want to be seen as a respectable driver drive something original. if u want to spend money buy a merc but above all learn to drive properly before u even consider sitting behind the wheel. that to me is more impressive than the size of whatever u drive.

"remember the mini"
simple.. it's called- SHORT MANS SYNDROME!
helps the resale value. nice to have in snow.
little man syndrome
