My other half wants to know why people who drive 4 x 4's have to slow down to go over speed humps?

He frequently gets stuck behind people in vehicles that are made for rough terrain going over speed bumps at a snails pace like they are afraid the suspension will pack up..what is that all about?

Answers:
i dont know but it bugs the piss out of me. i mean, there made for going off road, but the smallest bump makes them slow down. morons.
I don't get u!!!!
I don't want to throw my child against the window.
LOL. You know, I have wondered that myself. I live in Africa and they don't slow down here. It must be an American thing.
4x4's typically have stiffer suspension. A stiffer suspension translates into a rougher ride so they slow way down for the bumps. Ironically, a plush sedan is better over bumps than a monster 4x4. The soccer moms need to take that info into consideration before buying jumbo SUV's.
I used to drive a Jeep Cherokee and I never slowed down for speed humps. After all, those vehicles are made to take a bit of abuse.

With the small car I have now, I HAVE to slow down. It hits the bottom of car if I don't slow down.

Maybe the problem with some people that drive those things are that the drivers are elderly. Elderly drivers are overly cautious.
Although I haven't given a lot of thought to this question, in the moment it has seemed to me that:

A) Said drivers are actually WEENIES.And

B) They want to look BAD (but they're NOT).

Looking forward to hearing from perceived 4 x 4 weenies.

I just despise speed bumps.
It is mass punishment for everyone because of some select a-holes who want to speed.
because the suspesion in one of things costs as much a new small car, but those morons forget that they were designed for extreme use!
they are just chicken shits with egos as big as there cars.
these big stupid 4x4 are so heavy would break the suspension if you hit the bumps too hard, they are for display purposes only.
i never slow down and really enjoy bouncing over them in my jeep! loads of fun
i live in the country , have real mud on it and been dune driving in a 4x4 in the desert in my holidays.
dont be angry about 4x4's lot worse things in the world!
the people who go V E R Y slow are just nervous I expect.
because there a bunch of wusses
Because of the stiffness of the suspension. I have 2 shocks on each wheel and it is made to travel over rocks and logs, a plain ol speedbump makes me bounce up and to the side. It's not xtreme enough for my suspension. I may be a weenie on the road, but I'll take on any of you suv suckers off the road
Confusing isnt it.

I agree that knowledgeisgood should
PUT A SEAT BELT ON YOUR CHILD IF YOU WANT IT TO LIVE
gotta be phsycoligal. speed bumps are there to make you slow down so I guess they just do.
on a slightly different note have you ever noticed speed bumps are only in the nice parts of a neighborhood. guess thats one thing the government got right, no speed bumps in bad areas lest you need to make a hasty escape from a car jacker
Speed humps shouldn't be a problem for 4 x 4's. They should be out on the moors frightening peasants - sorry, pheasants.
Get a new other half ?
The reason is, our trucks have stiffer suspension, and maybe we just don't feel like beating on our trucks and body. Off road bumps are generally smoother because the dirt gives a little bit. But i guess all you car driving people are ******* and have nothing better to do than *****. And how do you "pack up" suspension. There is nothing to pack.
These vehicles slow down over speed humps not due to the vehicle but due to the driver. Given that 4x4s only encounter speed humps in cities, most of these drivers don't actually need these vehicles to go to Tesco or get their kids to school. Therefore, one must deduce that the owners of the vehicles in cities are of below average intelligence and therefore they feel the need to slow down when the vehicle is more than capable of taking speed humps at the speed limit!!
cos they dont want to damage thier chelsea tractors suspension..speed humps are not speed humps they are traffic calming devices..hence they are every 150ft or so .you normally find them on large estates.and narrow town streets where road safety(or speeding) is a problem..
There is a speed bump near me and you can't feel it I go over 30mp and can't feel it and it pisses me off when people in front brake and go over it at 10mph or less. I admit at first, when it was laid down I went slow and thought straight away I didn't feel anything it wasn't high enough. So I now when I have the chance go over at the speed limit.
Am I to assume that just because a vehicle has 4 wheel drive it should be driven over humps at speed. The sheep would hit the roof.
All vehicles should be driven with respect why would anybody want to spend money on an expensive item and then wreck it on purpose. A four wheel drive vehicle should never be taken over hard ground at speed. They have suspension like any othe car.
The type of vehicle that you appear to be referring to are built with heavy work in mind, they have greater ground clearance which enables them to be safely taken over uneven ground. they have greater towing capabilities than the normal family car, they have a larger engine to take care of the extra loads which this type of vehicle may encounter.
They will certainly outlast there contemporaries and by the sounds of it will outlast your other half`s car for sure if he races over speed humps.
How many cars on the road today in regular use were made in the 1940s.
Everyone should slow down for speed humps thats why they are there. It doesn't matter what kind of vehicle you drive you could easily break a spring shock or strut.
When I drove 18 wheelers, I chose to crawl over them too. Why? Like so many others said, the stiff, heavy duty suspension. If I had raced over them I would've thrown freight all over the inside of the trailer & my belongings all over the cab. What's the point anyway? Most of the people screaming through parking lots are the same ones who block up the left lane doing 10mph under the speed limit on the highway. Explain that?
because it has very hard springs
If a person buys one of these and never takes it off-road they are an idiot, that about says it all!
Because they're morons.
I drive an early Land-Rover Discovery 200TDi, I dont need to slow down over speedbumps, when I had a 1959 Land-Rover SII 88" I did as the leaf springs were alot stiffer than the coil springs fitted on my Discovery.

Vampire
The tension of the springs within the suspension struts isn't calibrated for off roading in most road 4x4's. They slow down because its not comfortable to drive fast over them, and they could damage their suspension and steering rack.
