Why does my car keep stalling?
Answers:
Have they checked the fuel filter? If thats not it go to a vw service center, they will know. :) Good Luck
,,,,,well you will buy Australian Petrol wont you?
probably need a tune up
Sounds like it is not getting gas to the carburetor.
have you gone to a mechanic? Checked the oil, water, fluids under the hood?
you may have dirt in fuel or fuel lines if you have let the fuel go to low at one point take it in for its service
I had a similar problem with a Rover 420GSDi, instead of stalling though it would stop accelerating! It had a faulty brake switch, whereby the engine thought the I was braking and would restrict fuel supply to the engine! This maybe what is up with ur Car!
It could be the timing or maybe you need a tune-up.. it could be several things.
If mechanics don't know what is wrong how are we going to diagnose the problem?
I've seen this happen to a car similar to your here in the states. Originally we thought it was the intake, but it turned out to be the fuel pump. Your's is a '99 I dont think you need a tune up yet, but unless someone put sugar in your gas tank, I would check the fuel pump, there could be a small leak, or simply the pump has gone bad.good luck!
I agree with Shayna. When you slow down, there is still a small amount of gas being sent to keep your car going. Apparently it's not sending enough gas to keep it going once you're not pressing the gas pedal.
I'd say either ur tranny is not disengauging or theres a loose nut behind the wheel. no garage can fix the second one.
the could be's.could be 1 or combination of
1.idle control valve
2.ignition module
3.bad plug wires and or spark plugs
4. carbon build up in the intake
5.fuel pump
6. clogged fuel filters and/or injectors
7.does it smell like u leakin fuel.(oxygen sensor)
There are many possible reasons:
dirty throttle body, bad airflow sensor, vacuum leak,
problem with wiring, bad ignition wires/spark plugs, etc.
Visit VW dealer for proper diagnostic instead of going to small garages.

is your battery OK?
my bike used to cut out when I applied the brakes, the revs were too low to contribute to a spark and the tail lamps took the battery power. I used to get a great backfire.
a free check would be to look at your plug leads, distributor/ECU wiring etc, is everything on tight?
if its a petrol engine you need to remove and clean the throttle body, it should last for a bit then but it will happen again even if you fit a new one, as they get coated with oil.
car hast done 50000 miles or so has it?
put some redex in with the petrol this will clean all the fuel lines and may work it did for me
presumably this car is fitted with Bosch fuel Injection. A very common problem with it, and it affects not only VW`s , is the Idle Air control valve gets "gummed" up. It can be cleaned, but the best cure is to put a new one on. Vauxhall (Opel) cars have the same problem.
try the idle speed control valve which is situated on the side of the throttle body if it is the fault you will have to buy a complete throttle body cause the valve comes with this this part retails from £270+ vat depending on engine code someone with a diagnostics machine will be able to pick up the fault code to confirm this. good luck.
Had a similar problem years ago with a Volvo 440. It kept stalling when slowing down at junctions or traffic lights. The problem was that one of the spark plugs had broken. So change your spark plugs and then get the timing checked, also I would start going to a different garage as all the ones near you seem rubbish at their jobs.
