Riding bikes in the middle of the road?

It has just been suggested that bikes should go into the middle of the carridgeway to make it safer for them.but will it be or will the cars just run them over?

Hi Robert, I think a dedicated bike lane is a great idea, and would promote the use of bikes. Here in Japan cyclists are considered pedestrians, in the main shopping areas and where there is a sidewalk we ride on the sidewalk, dodging pedestrians. When I first got here I was shocked, and would always ride on the road using the usual hand signals, the motorists thought I was waving at them and just waved back! I conformed after a cop, seeing me trying to take a right turn at a traffic light junction, whistles blowing, arms whirling like a windmill in a typhoon, told me that I was a pedestrian and I would cause a bad accident, and that I should dismount and wait for the lights to change and cross on foot. I subsequently found out that if a car hits a pedestrian and it is fatal it is the drivers fault, no matter what and is a mandatory manslaughter charge. The best country for bikes is The Netherlands.as a previous poster indicated. Just thought I would share. Have a nice day.
It sounds more dangerous, but the more I think about it- I think I would be more aware of their presence if they were in the middle.
I used to ride my bike in the middle of the road all the time, of course this was in a neighborhood, if your talkin a 35mph service drive or 50mph road hell no to many people dont see cars and motorcycles in front of then how are those idiots supposed to see something smaller and slower
Depends how many bonus points you get for hitting them.
Here in the U.S.A. we have bicycle paths or if not available the bike rider is in the road and must follow traffic laws just like any other vehicle. I don't know if the middle of the road would work, sounds dangerous because you would have to constantly watch traffic from both ways.
you will get run over.in Holland bikes have there own little road aside cars but lots of people have bikes there so it doesn't really applies to countries that don't have many bikes don't see it working.
