What do the white squares painted on the carriageway of motorways signify?

Answers:
They are used to provide a police vehicle - or helicopter - with two reference points between which to measure your time, and from that to caclulate your speed.

The system is called VASCAR, which, I think stands for Visual Actual Speed Calibration and Recording.

Check it out on the web.

I hope this helps..
They are there to record your speed, when being pursued by a police car he starts his timing equipment as he you pass over a square, they are a set distance apart, as you pass over the next square he stops the equipment and can work out your average speed between squares.
They are markers for the police to judge your speed.
they are mile markers or distance markers. helps the police helicopter measure distance and speed when tracking a car.
