Bmw e39 automatic gearbox?

Is it true that the automatic gearbox in the e39 97-03 5 series will pack up after 70k?

Answers:
No. The e39 can have problems with the auto box once the miles start to rack up but that does not mean yours will pack up at 70k. Yours could go on to 200k without any problems or it could start to give issues at 100k it just depends.
I think you sould go on the official site and go to the questions and answers column
Yes. Many auto trans on the earlier e39s have failed prematurely at around 70 to 80k. These were particularly a huge problem with 97-99 cars. The transmission built by ZF (a collaboration of GM and REnault, so figure out how crappy it is) has many problem areas, particularly with buildups inside the transmission, which leads to it seizing up. I would highly recommed getting a manual or a later model auto on the e39.

Otherwise it's a fabulous car.
No. Mine is still fine after 200K.
