How do i adjust the handbrake on my ford escort r reg 1.8 tdi 5 door lx?

Bill_s answer is absoutely incorrect. Here is what you do because I have done many of them. The brake adjuster in the rear brake drum is spring loaded and it keeps the brakes adjusted automatically for the service brake and the hand brake as well. (if it is working properly) if you know for sure that the adjuster is working properly, you want to have no more than 7 to 8 clicks minimum when you pull the handbrake. If you do not have this, just remove the housing around the handbrake and you will see a adjustment nut, loosen or tighten this nut to give you the number of clicks as stated above.
remove rear shoes and slacken off adjusters (remove center console ) nuts under neath handbrake
now adjust shoes to fit drim snug but not over tight
the evenly tighted up your nuts till you get about two clicks on it good luck

most of these cars have been adjusted via the cable. remove the plastic surrounding the handbrake, it just pulls up.
slacken off the 10mm nut on the cable.
remove your rear wheels and brake drums and adjust the shoes until you can feel the drum drag across them when you put it on.
with everything back together you will need to tighten the cable slightly in the car, do this until you have approx 4 clicks
