Your experiences with driving a Land rover Defender or series II? Easy to handle, even for a girl or not?

Once you get used to the width, easy as a car, but watch the gear box on the defender, they tend to break.
Any large vehicle is not easy to handle, and should in my opinion only be driven by people who've passed an advanced driving test. They're much bigger and heavier than a normal car for a start, and are capable of smashing smaller vehicles and wiping out pedestrians and even buildings given half a chance. You may not see small children close to the vehicle at all because of your relative height from the tarmac and poor visibility below the window line.
I was a landrover demonstrator driver and assisted in development of the later models. The series 11 and series 111 Landrovers in 88 and 109 form were a bit hard to drive with no power assised steering and also the gearboxes could be a tad difficult. As for the later Defenders they were a bit easyer to drive and use. Women drove all of the models of landrovers so girls / ladys can drive them but i would recomend the later of the models as a best option.
Depends what you want to do with it, driving on the road.no i wouldnt have one, off road.brilliant. Did 22 years in the Army and never had one problem with all my landrovers, its a good work horse, but its def not a family car..if you want a big family car pick the freelander or vitara, or any other 4x4 that you see, because hardly anyone drives these off the road.
I have a landrover freelander, and thats great to handle. Never tried a defender, but i bet you`l like it. Try a test drive.
I have a 2003 Land Rover Discovery Series 2 and I don't find it difficult to drive, but I have been driving for 18 years.
