Running Biodiesel long term, is it safe for your engine?

Bio diesel will do no harm whatsoever to your engine, when Mr Diesel invented the engine he designed it to run on peanut oil.
While working at AA I did reserch on this and found no differance in performance or engine wear, just make sure off regular sevicing and fuel filter changes. Happy saving 30% on fuel.
untreated vegetable oil will work in your engine but will clog the rings in time. Biodiesel that is sold at pumps has been processed to remove the esters. I don't know where you are getting vegetable oil such that it costs less than biodiesel at the pump. I looked at veggie oil in several stores and in large quantities but it always priced out higher than diesel at the pump.
Go to google and look up biodiesel. There are sites that will tell you everything you need to know to convert your veggie oil into true biodiesel.
Untreated vegetable oil should not be used in an engine. Clogging of rings . You might also be breaking the law concerning exise tax. I noticed a small car with the logo HM Customs who were stopping cars and dipping their tanks. This took place outside a cemetry where there were many Mercedes parked !!!
On a car such as a '92 Golf, with an indirect-injection engine, it probably won't make much difference. However, you may have to use a different mix (more diesel, less vegetable oil) in winter, as the vegetable oil will solidify in cold weather.
