Should cyclists be fined for breaking road laws?

London Mayor, Ken Livingstone, plans to police cyclists who jump red lights and ride on the pavements £60 - should we do this and is it a good use of police time and money?

Answers:
Ask the 5,000 pedestrians who end up injured or even put in hospital every year by people riding bicycles on pavements with no insurance in London alone, what they think. I have yet to see a cyclist who did not treat the highway code and pedestrians with anything but contempt!
YES!!!!!!
yes they should be fined
Yes, cyclists are road users as well!
yes we should as cyclists are road users just like car drivers but no its definetly not a good use of time and money for the metropoliten police, not good at all.
Clothesline them in your car when you get the chance :D
YES THEY SHOULD, they need to folow the rules of the road.if the run a red light and hit a car they need to be held accoutable for their actions
The rules applies to all. Everybody should follow it. Besides, it is for our safety and the safety of others on the roads.
no,they should be shot
I think they should get a warning first seeing cyclists don't pay license fees ( at least in ohio) but if caught a second time a ticket is warranted.
Yes, they should. They should be held to the highest standard since they are granted the privilege of using the road without paying road use taxes as cars do.
Yes they should.
I think the laws regarding road offences should be toughened up for all users!

not sure about good police time, maybe they could use the community support officers rather than actual police.
AT LEAST THAT AMOUNT, THE SLOVENLY HEALTH-OBSESSED DEVILS CHEATING THE MEDICOS OUT OF THEIR DOLE .
I think that's fair enough and I'm a cyclist. I'd like to say it's only a minority of cyclists who cause problems and ignore the basic rules and courtesies of the road but that's not what I see and I'm sick of the general resentment they cause being directed at me just because I have a bike. Bring it on.
At the age of 16 in 1980 I was fined £5 for riding my Bicycle on the footpath, the Police turned up at my house with a warrant at 6 AM,they were promptly told to leave by my parents.I still had to pay the fine,a 5th of my wages at the time although I didn't have to go to court as I pleaded guilty by post.As far as I am aware that law still exists, it appears nothing changes. The irony is that electric powered disabled vehicles are exempt from this law, tax and M.O.Ts as well as being a nuisance with their drivers as considerate as a slap in the face.
Yes - when they jump red lights it's dangerous, they get hit bya driver and who gets blame - driver

I have witnessed many times a cyclist jumping red light and thinking lucky no car came out form side. - cause the poor driver would have the blame.
yes they should, it may stop some of them riding like idiots
yes and they should have insurance as well
I'm with silverfox. shoot them all.
I used to work in London when I was 18 19 and Cyclist always skip red lights and hit pedestrians, most of them will ride off as how could you tell who they are.

I saw a cyclist cycling down a one way street and she got run over by a taxi. She died at the scene and it was disgusting to see.

It could of been avoided so easily aswell, luckily there were a lot of witnesses to say it wasnt the taxis fault. If she would have gone the next road down and added 2 mins to her journey she might be here now.

Cyclists should have number plates and should pay road tax. I always get them lean on my car in london if they los balance at traffic lights. If it doesnt leave a scratch it leaves a dirty paw mark on my beutiful clean car.
Yes, we should do this. I would like cyclists to have licenses too, such that they can be banned if they do it often.
Not just cyclists.
Whether I'm riding, walking, or driving, I find that it's ALL other road and pavement users that are the problem.
(I don't like to discriminate).
i agree and any bike on the road should be insured.
A fine ! thats letting them off to easy. They should be flogged and then put in the stocks for a week !!
