Is it normal for the downpipe to glow red after being on bypass. astra1.4 nreg?

the car also seems to struggle to accelerate when going up

Answers:
The chances are the cat has started to break up and choke itself. If you take the cat off and you cannot see through it replace.
Before the cat there is a sensor that may also cause a problem the lambda sensor could be fualty resulting in possible weak mixture which would result in high temperatures loss of power.
Your car is seriously overheating I would think. When was the last time you put water in it. Probably too late anyway. New head, head gasket, water pump and timing belt next on your shopping list
Has this been happening since head gasket was changed, if so then maybe they did not bleed the water system properly.
Then again the cat convertor answer sounds plausible but hard to see how it would get blocked, if it was then there would be a blowout in the exhaust before the cat
you have a bad cat replace cat before you burn your ride
or ignition has fecked up , management system or BIG air leak
