Is it legal for a child under 16 to pay for petrol I have put in my car?

I filled my car up today and like I have often done my 7 year old went in to pay, I also did this as a child for my parents. My child came back to the car with the money and said the lady won't let me pay. I questioned this and she said it is against the law. When I asked her why she said it may put her at risk, I asked her how and she compared it to selling her ciggarettes. I told her it was no different to paying for a pink of milk which i had picked up. I can't find anything on the net that say's it is illigel other than a under 16 filling a car or container, can someone help me with this please..:o)

Answers:
yes, it's true, you have to be 18 to buy gasoline
wow thats stupid.
Don't be so silly
7 years old is a little young to be walking across the gas station and entering the store alone.

If you are sending the child in to pre-pay for gasoline, then the store owner does not need to sell to a minor. THEY CAN REFUSE SERVICE TO ANYONE.

Gasoline is a hazardous substance.
A child under 16 is not allowed by laws all over the world to purchase petrol, sending a child in to pay for it is classed as the child making the purchase as it is the child who completes the financial transaction, don;t do it! All petrol stations will have signs up to say its illegal for anyone under 16 to purchase petrol
i don't think its ilegal, they don't ask or care, they just care about you paying. kinda depends on the situation too, if they see that the child came from the specific car i don't think they are gonna make a fuss about it.
i have never heard anything like this. I did about six months in a sainsbury's petrol station a few years ago and there was no such rule as long as you are paying for your petrol and not just driving out without paying they didn't care. I think she is making it up
At one gas station I saw "no one under the age of 16 may operate pump"on the pump so it's not unheard of.
Some cities and counties will not let minors purchase materials that can be mis-used such as gasoline, spray paint, sharpie markers, glue, ect as they may be used against the directions. San Francisco California has lots of these laws or ordinances
GASOLINE IS DANGEROUS.I DON'T WANT ANYONE SELLING IT TO MY KIDS FOR THEM TO PLAY WITH OR ANYTHING ELSE.YOU ON THE OTHER HAND DON'T CARE.DOES IT TAKE A REALLY BAD BURN ON YOUR KID FOR YOU TO SEE THE WRONG..GET OVER IT LADY!
I'm not sure if it is against the law but people (kids) do sniff petrol to get high. i think this is why the lady felt she could equate it to selling cigarettes.
it is illegal for a person under the age of 16 to FILL the car with petrol, but to pay for it you can be any age.
the woman at the petrol station was wrong. you have to be over 16 to operate the pump, not to actually purchace the petrol.
In the UK it would be illegal for a minor to purchase petrol. That also means paying for it, when someone else has filled up the car.
As long as I could see that the person who filled the tank was an adult, I would have allowed it. the cashier was being very cautious..perhaps they had a bad day with their boss.
Wow, my 12 year old nephew is always asking if he can fill up the car with petrol, but I show him the signs which say he is not allowed to use the pumps due to his age. I did not realise that he was not allowed to pay though.

I'll bear that in mind in the future.

Not judging or anything, but do you cross your son across the forecourt to pay? I have seen two people run over at garages as cars weave between the parked cars to vacant pumps.
Petrol and Petroleum Spirit Products
Petrol is a highly flammable liquid and gives off flammable vapour even at very low temperatures. Petrol vapour is heavier than air and does not disperse easily; it may also be carried long distances and hence create a hazard remote from its point of release.

Petrol vapour, even when present at less than explosive levels can have acute and chronic effects if inhaled.

Petrol stations and other retailers are not allowed to sell petrol to anyone under the age of 16 years.

(The Petroleum (Consolidation) Act 1928)
In the UK there are age limits on buying certain products. The cashier was correct in refusing to accept payment from a minor (I don't think there are any laws against using a petrol pump apart from specific company policies, I think it's just the purchasing of petrol which is a problem). These are the laws/guidelines on buying certain products:

Videos, cinema and computer games 12, 15 and 18 years
Liqueur chocolates 16
Cigarettes and tobacco 16
Petrol 16
Lottery tickets, scratch cards 16
Party poppers and caps 16
Knives 16
Air guns and pellets 17
Alcohol, solvents 18
Tattooing 18
Butane gas cigarette lighter refills, fireworks 18
I'm not really answering your question. You were right about Courage. Good Job! Do you like that show? I love it.
I only knows it's illegal to actually use the pump but never heard of paying.
It depends on the local laws; in some states in the US, there is no self-service allowed.
You must live in a nice area, kids round our way fill up cans and dont bother paying full stop. They just walk off or drive off!

They know they cant be touched by the assistants and unless the police get there asap they get away.

Ask yourself what do these kids do with the petrol? they set fire to stuff funny enough. If you worked in a petrol staton and sold a kid some fuel and they burnt or killed someone who do you think the parents would blame?
children can pay for petrol but they cant use the petrol pump to fill your car up
If it is, next try hash
Negative !
