How do I check & top-up the auto gearbox oil level on a 1994 BMW 325 td??

Answers:
I believe the one answer you received relating to putting your pinky into the filler hole to test actually refers to a manual transmission, while you indicate you have an automatic.

Most automatics have a transmission fluid dipstick in the engine compartment, not unlike your oil dipstick. It is usually, but not always color coded with a yellow head. Your owners manual will have specific instructions for checking the fluid level, but usually it is done after you have driven the car around some to warm up the fluid (running the engine alone does not do this--the transmission has to be turning). Then you park the car, shift it up and down through all of the shifter positions slowly once or twice (R, N, 2, 3, D, etc.). Then you put it back in park, remove the stick, wipe it down, reinsert it and pull it again to check the level. If the level is low, most cars are designed to use the actual tube in which the transmission dip sticks are placed as a filler tube by using a small funnel.

Do not overfill!

Add small amounts, repeat the process, and let the fluid you added have time to settle or you will not get a good reading.
look in your owners handbook.duh
Not specifically a BMW answer but usually you have two options. One can either fill from the interior through a panel under the carpet or from under the bonnet. If the latter you'll need to locate the filler hole and usually put a tube into in with a funnel on the end you filling from. If you have the handbook that should give you the required info. If not, you could always try your local dealership. When I had my 730 mine were always really helpful with things like this. Hope this of use.
generally, open the plug up, stick your pinky in the hole, and the fluid should be just under the oil plug. they have little inserts for the gearbox oil oil jugs. just stick it in there and fill her up.
check with bmw agent but think these units are 'sealed for life' and have no level guide
