What are those metal things in the road?

this may only be in the uk but along the path all round the city there are stud type things a few metres apart all down the road. then a bit further on there are a line of them going across the length of the path. i am totally stumped. can anyone help?

Answers:
Difficult to say without seeing them but it might be there to denote the limit of adoption, i.e. the extent of the Highway Authorities maintenance and legal responsibility.
cats eyes ?
I think it's so that if you start to vere off the road the bumping and the sound will alert you.
these are cat eyes they can be seen at night due to the reflection of your headlights
Cats eyes are in the middle of the road, the things that reflect car headlights at night. The grilles on the sides of the road are there to make a terrible noise if you start driving over them, therefore waking up the driver if they are falling asleep at the wheel- hence they are most commonly found on long stretches of boring road.
I'm intrigued but I can't think what they are. Have you asked at the town hall? Hope you can get back to us if you find out.
cats eyes
possible for the blind?
I have asked my father this ( he worked in highways for 30 yrs) and he isnt sure but he thikns they might be where they take core samples of the construction and condition of the roads for maintenance
