The lowest model of Merc (the A Class) is small and the Diesel model will do in excess of 55mpg. Better than most cars on the road today.
The 1 Series BMW Diesel will do more than 50mpg.
These bottom of the range cars - WHAT THE QUESTION IS ABOUT - are preferable (from an environmental point of view) than most other cars on the road - Go Preach elsewhere

mercs have poor build quality and everyone owns or has owned a bmw these days. Go japanese - more for your money!

In the US, the lowest merc is lower than the lowest bmw. Cheaper, less power.
