How to fit a timing belt on a astra 1.7td n reg but no locking kit martin mechanic?

step 1remove auxillary belt &bottom pulley.
step 2rotate engine direction of rotation until mark on bottom pulley lines up with nick in cover behind this will give you (TDC)no1 cylinder.
step 3 get a 6mm drill bit which you can use to lock the fuel pump
step 4 slacken water pump best to remove to replace o-ring as often leaks after disturbed &remove belt.
step 5 cam timing easy peezy;mark backplate with tipex at 12o'clock turn cam until valve hits piston mark pulley inline with mark on backplate,turn cam other direction until valve hits piston mark pulley agian now you put backplate mark midpoint.Easy.
step 6 refit belt waterpump(remember to grease new o-ring)retention .Remove drill refit covers pulleys&belt turn engine direction of rotation twice as to make sure no piston valve contact .
turn key.
it is not easy here is what to do get cylinder no 1 to tdc.top dead centre. there is a marking on the crank shaft pulley which has to co-inside with the marking on the timing cover .
next there is a marking on the cam shaft pulley and inner back cover of cylinder head.align both markings.
fix timing belt adjust tension of timing belt by loosining water pump assembly.move the water pump clockwise to adjust tension of new belt.now check tension of belt.and both timing markings on cam shaft gear and crank gear.they both have to co inside.or repeat procedure.
Before you attempt this ! bear in mind you need to set the timing on the fuel pump as well ! its normally locked in place with a drill bit or something similar if you get this wrong you will wreck your engine !!! buy a haynes manual and follow the procedure in there or you could cost yourself a lot of money and hassle
