99.9% sure head gasket as i do 10 to 20 of these cylinder heads per week for various dealers/garages.This job can be tricker than other guys are saying. Expect it to take longer than 2 hours double it if you are just a DIY guy. When head has been removed take to your local machine shop to have the cylinder head pressure tested, skimmed & have them perform a vacum leak check on the valves. To just fit a gasket is a waste of time. if the valves fail leak test then have them re-cut as car will be slighty rough on idle and will fail ommisions test on next MOT. You dont want to do the job twice.

P.S. this is one engine where you dont have to replace bolts every time, take bolts to machine shop as they will be able to measure length to make sure they are within required limits Bolts are about 65pounds a set so worth it.
I used to have a rover 25 and it had this problem. i broke down on the motorway and needed the AA to help me home. It was the cylinder head gasket that had broken and it cost me £600 to have it repaired. That's why I *used* to have a rover 25. Ive got a clio now and its lovely :)
cylinder head gasket, water is turning into steam and escaping out of exhaust. when the engine is at normal running temp hold a piece of cardboard against the end of the tail pipe the steam will condense and water will run down the cardboard. have you had the engine a bit hot lately eg traffic jams with the hot weather
yup its your head gasket its a common problem with them
got to agree with the head gasket theory, not too big a job if youv'e got a bit of mechanical know how and a haynes manual
You could have repaired the car yourself. A cylinder head gasket on a rover 25 takes 2 hours to replace. You were ripped off.
yep sounds like your head gasket get yourself a haynes manual and ave a go yourself. my boyfriend had the same problem with his rover. good luck
certainly sounds like the heaad gasket has gone but to replace it properly will take longer than 2 hrs ! also you would need to buy some new bolts for the head as well as the old ones will have strecthed and if you ptu it back together it will leak, also if the engine has overheated you need to check to see if the head iand the block are warped which is a common thing on the K series engine
James c above has got this spot on. The k series is renowned for blowing head gaskets. If you are confident on following the Haynes manual and have a half decent set of tools it is pretty straight forward job. The only special tool we needed was the one to lock the cams up. As James says get the head checked. We got lucky and no problems. It also came back nice and clean. Regarding the £600 quote, Yep that's what we got quoted also. It took me about 5 hours with tea and smoke breaks
Head gasket theory more than likely correct but the late 1990's Rover 200's also suffer with inlet manifold problems, something to do with the way it's fixed, not sure if it was resolved by the time th 25 series came out but it's not a big job. My head gasket went big time so had both jobs done at once, cost £600+ .ouch!
