When do i become eligible for free tax on an old car?

Answers:
This idea of 25 years old has become very mis-understood, the cut off date for tax-free cars is July 1973.
The Tory government introduced it, one of the cabinet was keen on old cars, and it was planned to run so that the 25 years rule applied, but when Labour came to power they changed it, it then applied to any vehicle 25 years or older from that date, hence the July 1973 date because it was changed in July 1998.

Had it been left, more and more cars would become eligable to tax-free status, however since the change it means less and less will - thank the labour party!
When it's twenty-five years old I believe.
when you are 147
Never.
The first answer is correct, after the vehicle is older than 25
the cut off point was for cars made in 1977 or earlier, so now that tax evade is irrelevant cos the government are money grabbing bastards
when the vehicle is 25 years old
This used to be set at 25 years or older, though has changed, the new legislation is,

All vehicles except buses and lorries used commercially, that were constructed before 1 January 1973 may tax in the 'historic vehicle' tax class.

never, when you are laying in your grave they will still tax you
try asking a gippo they always get away with car tax
Only one correct answer so far on this, as it USED TO BE when a car reached 25 years old, but it now is set in stone that up to 1973 is tax-free, any younger you have to pay.
Money-grabbing sonsofbiatches!
When you above 18 years of age.
any car registered before 1972 is tax free
If it's Connecticut, never.
Free road tax is only for cars registered before 1973. The rolling 25 year age concession was stopped by Labour when they took office. If your car was first registered in 1973 or older, then you get free road tax, if registered after 1973, then tough, you gotta pay-up.
to put it simply if its newer than 1973 it will never be tax free.

in reply to the answer below no it doesnt get it right.
once a vehicle is 25 years old it becomes tax exempt, but you still have to go to the post office each year to get an exempt tax disc with your mot & insurance, the tax disc is just the same but u dont pay for it
