Depends on what you asked them to service. a basic inspection usually doesnt do crap. unless its a good tech working. a good inspection can notice future problems with the car, such as leaking fluid, worn parts, worn tires or brakes, alignment problems, noises. stuff that most drivers get used to and dont notice.

A general service offered at some garages is:
Oil and filter change
sparkplugs and leads changed
airfilter replacement.
perhaps a new fuel filter if needed
perhaps carb/ injector service if needed.
If your unsure when you take a vehicle into a garage about what they will do when they service it, then ask them. After all you want to know what your paying for!!.
they perform preventive maintenance on your car based on the mileage of your car. you can look up what they generally are supposed to do in your owners manual
They purchase the part if they need to, and then replace it. Or perform whatever maintenance or such procedure as you tell them.
They don't do most of their stuff manually, as they have machines that help them with pulling off those hard metal parts like screws!
I don't think they know either dude, most of the ones I've seen have trouble tying their shoelaces let alone changing oil
Your question is very vague but as a long time mechanic servicing the car is a general term usually referred to as changing the oil.This should include an oil and filter change and a quick check of all fluid levels and a quick visual inspection of belt and hose conditions.
If you have a haynes manual for your car you can see what should be done when a technician carries out time based manitnenance of your vehicle. Most manufacturers have a service schedul for each of the vehicle in their range. On certain services there is only things like oil and filter changed and an inspecion of other components on a major service the items normally changed are: air, oil, and fuel filter, plugs, and oil, there is an inspection of all the lights, steering suspension brakes and otehr safety related components (again this vaires from manufacturer) on the top end of the market cars (i work for Mrecedes) the vehicle actually tells the technician what needs changing on the vehicle through a vast array of sensors and other parameters, the days of summer and winter services are long gone now on some major services a timing belt may be changed but thats depends on make, model, mileage etc
change oil, change any belts that need changing (fan belt etc), check brake fluid level and top up if necessary, check tyres and change if necessary, same with water level, washer level, wiper blades etc
depends what service is required generally an oil and filter change check brakes tyres exhaust and report on there condition clean or change plugs clean brakes adjustment of drum brakes and hand brake checks your lights and indicators
