I have a 1.8 astra sri, what bhp can i tune the engine too?
Answers:
Currently have the 2Ltr Turbo SRI and had the non-turbo before.
Tuning quite limited and expensive without turbo.
Go to LMF and buy bigger brakes 308mm (£200ish) and get some good tyres maybe lower the car (Springs £100) and save up for an exhaust (£150ish) and (K+N Panel Filter 35ish).
Go on Astrasport.co.uk and see what others have done.
If it is the Z18XE1 you can tune it up to about 160bhp with things like exhaust,de-cat,air induction system, remap, irrdium spark plugs etc.
See Regal motorsports website for details.
You don't say what year, so can't help that much.
I did have a 1989 astra sri 1.8, that i looked into tuning, but eventually just swapped the whole engine for a 2.0 16v, redtop type, which i bought in another astra, a gte, still mot'd and taxed for a month, for 200 quid. This was a 156bhp engine as standard, if memory serves a 1.8 is 120bhp.
Trying to fit another engine yourself is a bit tricky, you need some spanner skills, or some mates that do, but i'd recommend a bigger lump over tuning anytime, if you want a fast car, then start with a fast one, that way, if you spend lots of money on it, it gets very fast.
Otherwise, bigger, better brakes, and decent suspension, means you can brake harder, and later into corners, and go round them faster while your at it. maybe the equivelent of 50 or more horsepower for less money.
budget for:
Suspension £200
Brakes £300
You'll need lowered springs, shortened stiffened dampers, bigger brake discs, high performance pads, dot 5 brake fluid, and for another £200 or so high performance brake calipers.
You're local friendly kwik fit, or similar have been known to fit the above for, ahem, "back handers" so just be cheeky and ask around.
Good Luck, and drive safely.
