like the exhaust was blowing and there was a lack of power. I drove about one mile and revved it a bit. Then there was a small backfire and some smoke from the exhaust and it started to run fine after that. It was a very hot day. Running on three cylinders? Some thing sticking in the engine? It has a catalyst. Very well maintained motor. Should I risk taking it to a garage or wait until it does it again, It's been recently serviced. Any advice most gratefully accepted from all you experts out there..gino

It may have been vapor locked mine does that on very very hot days. Undo the gas cap and see if it releases pressure. Sounds like the carb was flooded. Not an expert so I am probably not right. I just know I have had the same problem.
might just be some dirt in the system. dont know much driving you do, might just be needing a good run. would suggest getting some petrol treatment, such as redex. fill the tank, put in redex and go for a good drive, good weather for a trip to the beach lol. if that dosent solve it, then try and get a local mechanic to have a look at it for a homer, cheaper than a garage as they have overheads and are more likely to charge you over the odds for a possible quick repair
