Did any one try an Audi A4 and a bmw 3 seriese, if so what are your thoughts?

Audi A4? A bit detached, and dead to drive, and I don't like front wheel drive. A friend had one, which I've driven, and it was ruinously expensive on parts and servicing.
Similarly, friends have found BMW's just ludicrously dear to run, so I'll stick to my two Mercedes 190E's that I service myself, thanks.
I test-drove an A4 (& an A6) recently, both very impressive. Sorry, but I can't be doing with a BMW, it send out a "wally" vibe. In the end I bought a Lexus.
