I have aquired petrol generater?

You might want to check the seals and all the fluid levels. Like a vehicle that has been sitting for a time, the gaskets and seals can crack from drying out and non-use. Just a thought.
wat
Try adding a fuel additive which are available it might help "Clean" the engine internally.
Is the generator of ample size to handle the wattage requirements of your trailer? It would seem to me that a food trailer would demand alot of watts, but if your trailer/appliances are not tripping the breaker on the generator then you may have have an issue with the size and length of connection that you are utilizing to connect your trailer. See if the cord gets hot.
Will certainly need spark plug and change of fluids. But usually when someone "acquires" a generator they are usually after a hard life and wont run much off it. You dont say what size engine it has. There is only one way to test a genny before you buy it and that is to start it from cold and put on a full kettle of water on the boil. If it cant hack that then it is not worth the hassle
