Toyota corolla - 1300cc 'R' reg. I am told the cam belt needs replacing after 50,000 miles - is this correct?

after 50k that is a good preventatvie maintaince item. it is better to do it now, than wait for the belt to break later
that is a smart idea, by the way it is a timing belt. they wear out and it is easier to take care off it now when you have time instead of waiting for it to snap when you have to be somewhere

Definitely get it done. It is becoming more and more usual to change it regularly. If you think about it, it is only a piece of rubber that is under constant strain every time you start and drive your car. It will cost you alot more in the long run if it fails

I think those are considered "interference engines" which means when the belt breaks EVERYTHING inside your engine can get all chewed up, not just the belt! Replace it!
