Is there a case for a compulsory 5 year driving retest in the UK?
Surely if you cannot control a ton of metal to the required standard after 5 years of holding a licence, then really you shouldn't be driving.
This would also have the added bonus of freeing up road space and getting rid of all the nut- nuts out there
Yahoo should market Q&A as an anger managment site.. I feel so much better now :o)

Its a good thing if its none profit, it will keep every one up to date with all traffic changes. if you look at South Africa they have to renew their licence every five years, but they don't redo the the driving test. they basically check your eye site and if there are any out standing traffic violations against your name. and they charge you for the renewal as well.
It would be seen as a way to make more money.
Driving is expensive enough as it is.
Why you think we have the driving test in the first place? They will not pass you if you can not drive the 'ton of metal' safely in the first place.
Also just need to add - just because somebody regularly drives like a complete idiot does not mean to say they can not drive carefully and sensibly for 1 hour to pass a test.
Ideally, annual retests - after all, your car has to have them!
Realistically, though, every 3 or 5 years would be an excellent idea. After all, pilots have to undertake checks (medical and practical) as often as every 6 months.
yes but, t3h1, the amount of idiots drin=ving around is scary, I find it hard to believe many got a driving licence. So, yes, there should be a driving test retake after 5 years, but you could make it free.
A driving test does not prove you can drive a car, only that you can control one under specific cicumstances. I was told after I had passed my test that I now needed to go and learn how to drive.
But it would be one way of cutting out the idiots.
PCV and LGV drivers, most coach and bus companies operate a system where plain clothes driving instuctors come on to the bus when you are doing your shift, they file a report to management regarding your driving,if you make mistakes it is noted ,and you appear before the boss and he can send you back to training school for a few days.if you are a danger to the public you get sacked ,simple as that.no need for the govt to bring fresh laws in as this is just another way of robbing the drivers of more cash.as for medicals most companies give you regular check ups to see if you are fit enough.at 50 yrs old you have to go through a strict medical at your doctors to get your lic renewed, and this is compulsary every 5 yrs after that .this medical costs the DRIVER £120.and if you are not fit your PCV or LGV lic does not get renewed
No after all a driving test just shows you can drive to a test standard, many people get in to bad habits when they are on there own driving with one hand etc also it would just be seen as a way for the goverment to make more money out of the already robbed motorist
i think an eye test every couple of years would be a good start, judging by the amount of people who say i didnt see you after a bump there are more than a few who need glasses.
yes and no, it would have to be free, and why a ban for 6 months, if someone fails there first driving test they can take another one right away, if they can get booked in
and even people who are complete prats on the road can drive normally for 1 hour. i thinks its good once U get to a certain age
you must really throwing money at the government
Dont you think theres enough bureaucracy already?
