I'm not so sure, you shouldn't have to do that to keep your engine cool. Have you checked your coolant level & fan belt? If your water pump has gone it's gonna cost you about £300 to get it mended.
Normal, I have a mini and run the heaters all the time- I just roll down the windows if I get hot. It's perfectly fine in weather like this.
the fan should cut in. turnin heaters on is a good short term fix, but best to get it looked at..
Should get it checked really. Problems rarely fix themselves and generally get worse
check your fan connections.. also.. get it checked at a garage.. could be head gasket.. also check radiator water level when cold.. (use a cloth to open cap if engine warm..)
I had one of those, a red one, great little runner. You couldn't beat it on a sunny day, windows open, Kajagoogoo on the stereo, not a care in the world. I had exactly the same problem. If the fan didn't cut in a would throw a bucket of water over the bonnet (I carried one at all times) then fan it with a towel. This usually got the temperature right down. In the end I had to sell mine when the problem became so bad that to avoid standing in traffic I drove round between 1 and 4 in the morning when the roads where quiet. Hope it doesn't come to that.
It sounds like the temperature snesor in the radiator is faulty, this is the usal fault when a fanc doesnt cut in. The sensor is actually a resistor which as the coolant gets hotter the resistance inside drops and until it completes the circuit to allow the fan to cut in (providing the fan is wroking of course) if your mechanically minded then it is fairly easy to test if your not take it to a garage they shouldnt charge more than £50 max including the sensor, if you would like to know how to test the sensor please feel free to message me and ill describe how to do it
