Why dont you just buy a camper van?
Funny that, I was going to post a question today about converting a panel van to a camper van! I had a Mercedes 609D in 1999 and drove it overland to India, then shipped it to Oz and went round it, truth is my friend, if you just want to do an `overland` trip, then just get the van, not to big, a transit or something, then put a couple of windows in it and smarten up the inside with a table and a couple of chairs, stick a permenant bed in if poss and a bit of cupboard space, chuck a solar panel on top and an invertor for your leckie, keep it simple, you will attract les attention and be able to park anywhere, If you want a camper for family use etc, either buy one, or, take your time converting one, there is a book you can buy.. eeerr i forget what its called though! tip. make sure you have twin wheels at the rear.
Go for it, drive to australia! if i can, you can.
There are alot of people that'll do that kind of work for you. I work for a "commercial vehicle bodybuilders" that can do that kind of thing, if you do a search on that, I'm sure you'll get some good results. There are a lot of companies like that in Birmingham that I know of. We have a branch there and two in Yorkshire.
Some companies can do a turn key product where by you drop the vehicle off and then collect later completed but I would expect any work to take about 2 weeks.
Look for a VBRA (Vehicle Body Builders and Repairers association) or SMMT (Small Motor Manufacturuers and traders)company. or have a look at www.cvshow.com for some company names.
One thing to look out for is insurance, if you have an entirely bespoke build or you do a lot of the work yourself, you may end up paying higher premiums since insurance companies sometimes find it difficult putting a value on your work.
As for price, a one off conversion is going to cost more than a production line build (ie economies of scale). Get a quote or ball park figure from a body builder, then you'll have something to work with.
