Our car is using fuel much faster than usual, does anyone know why?

It's an old (early 1990's) Citroen AX Diesel. The air filter has been replaced and we don't know where to look next. Any ideas greatly appreciated.

Answers:
it's an old car.. could well just be that the engine parts are worn. going by years is a very bad indicator of this - instead, what's the mileage and how hard has it been driven?

dunno what the ease or cost of overhauling a citroen diesel is like (i managed to do a 1.0 vw petrol motor of similar age quite affordably and restore it from an oil & petrol hungry mess to a civilised beast), you may do as well to get hold of a replacement engine.
(how does it do on oil, does it smoke really badly?)

if it has any kind of active engine management computer, check that all the sensors are ok, there's no problem with wiring, that the injectors aren't playing up etc. also on a small, european car of such a vintage you really, really need to make sure that the tank, fuel supply pipes, and crucially the filler pipe (from the tank to the filler cap) aren't leaking. my old polo suffered rust-through of this pipe and probably lost me fifty quid of fuel altogether; can't say you'd suffer exactly the same problem as it's a different manufacturer etc, but lets face it - the AX was kinda tinplate even when it was built. you deserve credit just for keeping it alive this long.

edit: To the lady who is upset she only managed to half-fill a focus for "20.00".. are you american, and are those dollars? I'd have to spend £25 (worth $1.6 to the £1.0) just to half fill my own tank and it's been that way for a couple years. Hush.
Try replacing the glow plugs

Tire pressure, fuel filter, tune up, leak in the tank or fuel hose, someone siphoning your tank. Could be an endless number of things.
Before driving your car, look under for any signs of leakage. It could continually be dripping tiny drops which may not be noticeable at first.
check your tires,sometimes when they are low you find you go threw more gas..they might need some air.
There could be any number of reasons. One could be tire pressure is down. Check the air in your tires. Check the oil,, etc. Try getting a tune-up.
my boyfriend a mechanic told me that now they are putting something in the fuel that makes it cheaper but it burns faster

i really dont know if that is true, but my car is the same way and it is a ford focus lx 2001 also maybe you need a tune-up take it to a mechanic shop and i just put gas in my car yesterday 20.00 i was on empty and it only went to half a tank i am sooooooooooooooooo angry (just had to get that off my chest)
take no notice .just get it serviced ,plugs,leads,air filter.oil filter ,fuel filter,oil,and put some redex fuel treatment in .
make shore you are not loosing fuel because of a leaking tank or fuel pipes;
have you got those england flags on your car windows

i have heard (on the radio) they can cost an extra £1 in fuel per hour as it changes the aerodynamicsof the car
