It all sounds so easy doesnt it. Again if you are asking these questions then you dont know how to fix it. Leave these jobs to the professionals, you are dealing with peoples lives here.
People shouldnt be leaving detailed answers to such questions, as you are taking apart components of a car that are vital to it being a safe vehicle on the road. All these parts need to be dissassembled and repaired to certain standards and you really need to know what you are doing
very carefully
Take it to your local dealer
if your boot is torn.why not replace the complete shaft.its faster and easier to do.if the boot has been torn for some time what makes you think the bearnings arent bad from road dirt sand and ect.do the shaft save your self problems down the road
Dont listen to that clown telling you to replace the whole driveshaft- unless money just isnt an issue in which case you wouldnt be here askin about it would you- Take the shaft off, unclip the joint, whip off old rubber, put new one on & put it all back- time 2-3 hours cost next to nowt.
Get a haynes manual, its all in there.
save the headaches.buy a complete rebuilt shaft assy and install it
I am a mech and I'll guarantee he is not a clown..
You just replace that boot and your going to be replacing the whole thing sooner than you think. ;) replace it all once you have it out there is no sense in doing a partial job it's cheap and it's easy to replace it all!
If the boot has been tore there is wear to the internal parts plain and simple, anything other than replacing the whole thing is taking a chance!
I wouldnt go to the extreme of repalcing the shaft i would simply clean out all the old grease and dirt from the joint with parrafin and a stout brush, then i would re-pack the joint with fresh grease and you can actually buy either glue together boots or stretchy boots which mean you dont need to dismantle the shaft, with the stretchy boot though you will need to buy the special cone that goes with it
Best advise..pay to have it done.
