I have a Ford Focus TDi (2000) with a knackered diesel pump and need to know if anyone else has had problems.?
I have now been told that the diesel pump is kapput. I have had the car from nearly new and it has just completed 72,000m. I haven't had to change a bulb on it up to now, it's still operating with the same battery and exhaust. All I have had to replace is the tyres and one set of brake pads.
The bill that is being presented to me is about £1400. I am very upset.
I know that diesels are good for 300,000m and they are economic, but when faced with a bill of this magnitude, the economy pales into insignificance - I might as well have stuck with a petrol variant.
The car was recalled a couple years ago for a fuel system problem (leaking air in faulty fuel line) and was supposedly fixed.
What the hell do I do? The car is over 6 years old (in good nick) its not worth throwing £1400 at it. HELP!

I had a similar problem on my Mondeo (TDCi) which had catastrophic failure of the fuel pump at 156 miles and 6000 miles. Both pumps, injectors etc were replaced under warranty.
I know a number of people who have had pump problems on Diesel Fords, TDi and TDCi. Unfortunately it is quite common.
As you are out of warranty then do not go to a Ford dealer for the repair. Look for your nearest Diesel specialist who will give you a much more competitive quote. I know of one in Colchester?
You could also fix with second hand parts, again your local diesel specialist may be able to help you. The job is not beyond a reasonable home mechanic but if you are not completely confident do not attempt it yourself. The pump needs to be timed to the engine or your car will run poorly, if at all.
Who quoted this price? Ford Main dealer? You can shop around and even consider second hand (breakers part) Any backstreet diesel specialist will be able to fit it. Then get shot of it! it's obviously got the 7 year itch
i own a repair shop,,and you aren't the only one having that problem,i have done a few of them this year and it seems to be a common problem with them,i have to admit that pretty high for what they did to it,but at this point you really have no choice,,id ask them to come down a little bit on the bill, because what they did wasn't that hard of a job to do,i have done them and the gas engines both, and that bill is pretty high i wish you good luck with it,,the car will last a lot longer,so i guess if i had to id pay it,good luck i hope this help,s.
i have the same problem with my mondeo Tdci i have shopped about and got a price for 800 the pump will not be new it will be reconditioned this price is from a diesel fitter
