How do i prepair plastic car panel for painting?
Answers:
What part of the car are you painting?
If your painting a fender, door or quarter panel the plastic is called SMC sheet molded compound you need to get some Ajax or any type of abrasive cleaner and a red 3M scotch brite pad you can find them at any auto parts store.Apply cleaner on the pad add water and scrub the panel till there are no shiny places on the part.
If it is a bumper you will need to get a plastic bumper prep to remove the mold release agents in the bumper. When the manufacture makes the mold for the bumper they spray a release agent on the mold to help make it easier to remove the bumper from the mold. These agents stay on the bumper and make it difficult if not impossible for paint to stick to it.Go to a paint store and ask for plastic bumper prep.(It smells like vinegar)
after you wipe it on with a clean rag immediately wipe it off with a dry clean rag. Then use the scotch brite with the clenser wash with soap and water then go over it again with the bumper prep. Then your ready to prime paint and clear
l think you need to get a new one.
Pretty much the same as metal:
Prime
Sand
Prime again
Clear off dust
Sand again
Clear off dust
Paint
Keep in dust-free environment until it dries
Add another coat
Air dry it again
Clear coat
Air dry
Clear coat
This is for the best results, but then again I'm into detailing cars; feel free to add 1 coat of anything.
Ask the paint manufacturer for a data sheet. Follow the instructions. They know their individual product range - hopefully!
